When I try to scan or copy from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), it makes a loud noise for a few seconds, then tells  me to re-load the original in the ADF.  It also makes the same noise (but of shorted duration) when the printer is turned on, or off.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Clean the ADF rollers and the separator pad

Dust inside the automatic document feeder (ADF) can result in paper feed issues.

  1. Get a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

  2. Remove the original document from the ADF.

  3. Turn off the printer.

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  5. Open the ADF cover.

  6. Find the paper pick rollers and the separator pad inside the ADF.

  7. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with filtered or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  8. Use the damp cloth to clean the paper pick rollers and the separator pad.

  9. Leave the ADF cover open for two minutes to allow the rollers and pad to dry.

  10. Close the ADF cover.

  11. Reconnect the power cord to the printer, and then turn on the printer.

  12. Slide in the paper width guides until they rest against the sides of the paper.

  13. Try to scan or copy with the ADF.

Thank you for trying to help.  (Apologies for the delay in dealing with this; I have been busy trying to buy our normal shopping when others are stripping the shelves of essential items, due to the COVID-19 situation).

I have tried the remedies suggested, but none help.

I am fairly sure (though it is hard to be certain) that my problem is mechanical.  As I said in the original posting there is a new, loud noise, as the ADF attempts to run, but the original is not picked up (and it does not move at all, which suggests that it is not simply a dusty pick-up roller).  The same noise (though of shorter duration) is heard on turning the printer ON, or OFF.  See here for a video with sound.

Any assistance with further diagnosis, disassembly of the ADF, etc. would be much appreciated.
