Since 2010 and the issue isn't resolved?  I thought this site was for finding solutions.  Is there another site for that or something?

There are a bunch of tech support sites out there. Google is your friend. Google the error message.

If you are still in warranty, call their 800 (888) number.

Oh.  I did all that years ago.  Never mind.

I don't get that option when I go to the folder. This is what I get:

I did resolve the problem.

My configration.

Window 7 pro

Officejet 6500 E710n-z with drive OJ6500_E710n-z_Basic_x86_231

Printer network connected by wire with router.

When I installed the drive  OJ6500_E710n-z_Basic_x86_231,  I lost the buttons for scan and other function. If I installed the lastest drive  OJ6500_E710n-z_Basicx86_1315,  it would be OK.   (you can download the new drive at hp support).

But I did not  lik the new one. So I want to fix the problem by use the tool ScanToPCActivationApp.exe with parameter.

I read this topic and found the answer in the early reply, Thanks.  I will  give what I did step by step.

After installing the drive the printer is ready for work, check shutcut Start menu-> All program-> Hp-> HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z-->HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z  this will direct to "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z\Bin\HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z.exe".  If you cound find the manage your scan and Activate scan to computer, then it work fine, you do not need do any thing, otherwise, keep going.

First.

Get your printer IP address ont the printer. Screen--> setup-->net work--> view network sumary --> wired or wireless.

Second, Get you printer ID.

open IE and input the ip address of the printer, such as 192.168.0.100 to open Officejet 6500 E710n-z  Embedded Web Server , then find the tool table and  get  Printer Information, you could  find  Product Serial Number in the details at the bottom of the page.

Then

Right click on your desktop,  choose new-->shortcut from the menu. And browe the ScanToPCActivationApp.exe at C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z\Bin. it will display in the box.  add parameter at the end of the line.

-deviceID  PSN:NW    replace the PSN with yours which is got at the second step.

the whole line ,For example:  "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z\Bin\ScanToPCActivationApp.exe" -deviceid CNXXXXXXXMZ05JW:NW

Come to here, Most job is done.

After that,

Follow the window. put name and finish.

Finally, when you want to scan to computer, just click the shorcut, a window for activate the function will pop up, and it will be enjoyed.

I  tried, it did work.

Sorry, this is about a HP8500 printer, but they have the very same issue.

Hi, same here, just checking the forums when I remeber how easy it could be if the scan to computer function actually worked on my now 3 year old OfficeJet Pro HP 8500A Plus.

When I bought the printer I assumed that all this "pro" and "plus" and the HP name meant that it would actully work! The print to computer function worked the first year or so, but then the paper collection did not! Then around two year ago, HP cam with an update, that solved the issue with pucking up the paper - curtical for a printer one should think - but then the scan to computer function did stop working.

Over the years, I must have restarted, reset, uninstalled, re-installed the software more than 10-20 times, but the scan to computer does still not work.

Do anyone know if this feature work on newer HP printers? Or do work on other brands?

OMG, I just looked for updated drivers, and saw this update in August!!!!

I'm off to test it now. Wonder *if* 😉

The Full Feature Software and driver solution is the complete software solution intended for users who want more than just a basic drivers. IMPORTANT NOTES For Windows XP Starter Edition, Windows ...

  (More details)

Oops, I see this is the same version that was talked about in 2012???? Hmmm...still gonna give it all an uninstall and reinstall and see what happens.

Very helpful tip thanks!!

If I hadnt created the shortcut manually, no way I could find how to activate the scantopcapp. The HP printer stoppped showing any options for scan activation..instead launching standard Control Panel shell.... Shame HP indeed

I have the same computer and I don't have the icon on my desktop. Even as an agent with HP in the past, the hardships of actually finding solutions for callers was extremely monumentous and arduous.

The last time I had the icon indicated in your image was when I first acquired Win 8.0. Even with other OS versions of Windows the icon was placed on the desktop at first install. When a solution required a removal and re-install of the printer suite the icon never came back. Not once. If I want a totally clean uninstall I need a scrubber for the current version of HP printer software.
