Operating System: macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I have a HP Pro 6968. For some reason, scanning has just failed. The only thing that happened is a firmware upgrade. I have reinstalled all the HP software, reset MAC printers, restarted everything, and reached the point on the HP support pages where it says I should get a new printer. Not happy with that answer. I can print on the device (so I have network connectivity) and it can make copies. I tried downloading a firmware upgrade, but when I tried to install it the installer said it was not the correct firmware for this device. None of the mac scanning software options work (Easy Scan, image capture, etc.  They all just "spin" forever. It seems they connect, but not sure about that. I am running mac 13.6.1.  Anyone have advice?
