You can run sfc more than one time to catch / fix more errors -- and you may end up having to look at the .log file to see what you need to fix manually.  .LOG files are text, open with Notepad.

I have pinged ShlomiL  - if he is around and available, he may get back to us.  We are all volunteers and we are spread around the globe -- folks come and go as they wish / need.  Smiling.

I don't like errors that include not being able to use WebScan -- that program is not printer software driver dependent.  It makes the issue worse in that the Windows vanilla print drivers on the system are apparently failing.

You may end up having to run a Recovery on the OS.  Eww.

Thank you again and I hope that SclhomlL will respond.

Dragon-Fur,

Found a slick DOS command line to eliminate all of the junk lines that SFC\Scannow usually comes up with when it creates the CBS.log.

How can I get that to you? I do not see any way to attach a txt file. Here t'is as I copied it from the .txt file. Please let me know if you see something that may hold the answer to my problem with scanning.

Hi @steve47co1,

Please try the following steps and clarify accordingly:

  1. Click the Windows Logo and the R keys, the Run dialog appears.
  2. Type services.msc and press enter.
  3. Locate the Windows Image Acquisition service.
  4. Right click it and select Properties.
  5. Open teh Dependencies tab.
  6. Expend any shown service.

What exact services are listed within the dependencies tab for that service?

Thank you for weighing in, SchlomiL,

The dependencies and the sub-dependencies listed for the WIA service are:

1. Remote Procedure Call

- DCOM Server Process Launcher

- RPC Endpoint Mapper

2. Shell Hardware Detection

- Remote Procedure Call

      - DCOM Server Process Launcher

      - RPC Endpoint Mapper

All are set to Automatic and are started. (WIA is set to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Thank you again for your interest in my problem.

A great leap here, based on very sketchy data:

Printer software and other installed programs require at least a certain level of .NET Framework to be installed and functional (uncorrupted and enabled).

I believe you must have at installed, at absolute minimum, .NET Framework 3.5 -- the actual version required for some programs to run on your computer may be higher.

.NET Framework 3.51 should be included in your OS; check / enable it in Windows Features.

How To Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7

Some program sets on your computer may like to have .NET Framework 4.x installed (and enabled).

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer)

Once .NET Framework 4.0 installed, you can perhaps update that package to 4.5.2:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 (Web Installer) for Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, etc.

I continue to be concerned that you cannot run Webscan -- the program is not dependent on your printer software (Full Feature Software package).

Windows Updates are not as common for Windows 7 -- there is perhaps an Update that has compromised your File System.

You could try using System Restore to take the system "back in time" to a date when the system was working as expected.  (Have the complete system backed up before running System Restore.)

Dragon-Fur,

Ok, in order of your questions:

1. Yes, Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5.1 is enabled in Features and I have the latest version installed - 4.6.1.

2. I can run web scan, but it is  a pain and doesn't solve scanning in original documents to my computer.

3. I don't use System Restore; I use Acronis Backup; once a week, but it takes almost a whole day to restore my computer -  it is 478.3 GB. Three SSD's, one HDD.

4. An interesting note - I look at my laptop's and my desktop's Program Features list side by side and they are identical except for one item that I cannot enable on the desktop - the Windows Process Activation Service where there is a checkbox for .NET Environment. On my laptop, it is checked, but not on my desktop and I cannot enable it. I get  a failure message when I hit "OK."

Does that give you any hints?

Windows Process Activation Service is part of your Services:

Control Panel > icon view > Administrative Tools > Services

Not sure -- both my Windows 10 systems are set to run the WPA Service Manually (trigged by program start) -- perhaps the service must be running to change the configuration in Windows Features.

Or maybe the manual start is not working as expected when called.  Note the dependencies are the same as those requested by WIA.

Open Services, scroll down > Highlight Windows Process Activation Service > Start

Good to hear that Webscan works -- irregardless of the fact it is a pain..

Try using one of the alternatives here:

Scanning Program Options

naps2 and Infranview are nice scanning programs.

Yes, recovery is a large inconvenience -- and it may end up not helping.  It is a personal decision at what point you decide to try it.

If you can do so, I would suspect if there are File System issues, these are located in the main install disk (where Windows is located / installed)  -- Restore the main disk / OS.

This could be my problem - Windows Process Activation Service is not listed in my Services! Can I install that separately?

Thank you.

HP Recommended

Dragon-Fur,

I enabled it in WindowsFeatures and it is now listed in Windows Services, but an error message also popped up that "An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed."

When I restart, as advised, it will probably be unchecked and missing from my Windows Services.
