HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer

Windows 11, hp all-in-one computer PC24-df1000i, USB to 5610. I can print with no problems, but the computer can't find the scanner. Looks like a Win11 driver issue. Tried hp Smart - it can't find the 5610 as a scanner, and it can't even find the connected, and working, 5610 as a printer. Tried a number of suggested solutions but nothing has worked or even made any progress. Tried downloading and installing VueScan (one suggestion) but it stops at a dialog asking me for a serial number, which I don't have. Clicking through that ... it can't find a scanner!

The 5610 works fine as a scanner if I connect it via the same USB cable to an hpEnvy Win 10 machine. Anyone have a work-around?
