Hi there,
I have an HP Officejet Pro 9120e series and use the document feeder regularly to scan invoices to email.
recently I have been experiencing the following error when using the app on my iPhone - scanning from the printer is not available when connected remotely to scan use the camera.
yest the printer will print from the same device. I previously got it working by deleting the re downloading the app the printer restart but now this is not working either.
i have just made sure the phone is on the latest software and the problem is still there - any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi @James1987,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating this is, especially when scanning invoices is part of your workflow, and the app suddenly stops working. The error “Scanning from the printer is not available when connected remotely” means the HP app is in remote mode, which limits scanning from the printer’s document feeder.
Here’s how to fix it:
Why This Happens
- HP Smart uses cloud-based remote printing when your phone and printer are not on the same local network.
- In remote mode, scanning from the printer’s feeder is disabled; only camera scanning works.
- Printing works because HP Smart can send jobs via HP Cloud Print, but scanning requires a direct connection.
Step 1: Ensure Local Network Connection
- Make sure your iPhone and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Disable VPN or mobile data temporarily.
- Open HP app → Check if it shows “Connected” (not “Remote”).
Step 2: Reset HP App
- Delete the HP app from your iPhone.
- Restart your phone.
- Reinstall the HP app from the App Store. 👉 HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site
Step 3: Re-enable Web Services
- On the printer:
- Go to Setup → Web Services → Enable.
- This ensures the HP app can manage local and remote features properly.
Step 4: Update Firmware
- Even if recent, confirm the latest firmware: 👉 HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e All-in-One series | HP® Support
Step 5: Test Scanning
- Open HP app → Tap Scan → Choose Printer Scanner.
- If it still says “Remote,” check Wi-Fi settings again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
