When using the HP scan software, it requires me to scan each document and name while saving. Previously I had a Brother scanner and it would scan to a preselected folder and name the file as scan plus a time date stamp. This allowed me to then open the files and edit and/or save as needed. I prefer the HP san quality but prefer the Brother software. Is there an aftmarket software that I can use that will accomplish this or should I reurn my HP printer/scanner and go elsewhere?

If they work with your Laser printer and its software, the following should do something similar to what you are seeking.
HP Scan Extended – Exceptional HP free scan program: Single, Multiple scans, image and PDF scans, Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary). Download, save, and install to use.
NAPS2 -- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s). Includes OCR. Download, save, and install to use.
Example - HP Scan Extended
This sample:
Set to "Save as JPEG" (image / photo)
Set to Size "Auto-Detect"
Click More >
Select Destination
Click the + next to the entry in File Name
Enter the information
Click OK to save the changes in the little File Name menu
Click < Less to go back to the main scan menu
When all settings are as you like them, click Scan
