HP Photosmart 7520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Photosmart 7520 printer/scanner.  When I try to scan multiple documents, the feeder pulls the first document about an 1/8 of an inch, then stops.  I can hear the rollers turning, but none of the papers move.  After a few seconds, an error pops up stating to ensure papers are correctly placed in feeder.

i have noticed this problem getting progressively worse over months & years.  Initially, i had to help feed the papers in, then the feeder would work.  I have opened the top portion of the scanner, checked the rollers for any jams and also cleaned the rollers, and reset the papers, proper margin spacing, etc., still get that error.  Powered printer off, waited, then powered on again, but still get the same error.

It almost seems like some of the rollers cannot reach or pull the papers.  So, something in the ADF is not working.   I am curious if there are replacement ADF parts or if it's time to toss this P.O.C.  and get a new one?

@tgkaiaw,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues related to your HP Printer. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a recent power outage or surge?
  • Have you tried to clean the ADF rollers?
  • Have you tried to update the printer firmware?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Alternatively, you can follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP All-in-One Printers - The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Does Not Pick Paper

You can also update the Firmware, you can directly update the printer firmware from the printer control panel or download the software from our HP support website,

Click here for download - https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/ps7520/PS_7520_R1607A.exe

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

It has nothing to do with power or any other troubleshooting tips provided.  It's a manufacturing defect.  Had that problem from day one, and it only got worse.  When you place a document in the ADF, the first roller in the top feed mechnism will grab the paper and pull it in.  When it's told to scan, the first roller pulls it in until it hits the rubber separation pad, which is used to ensure only one sheet is fed.  That pad is so "grippy", the second roller cannot feed the paper in to the bottom roller that is right before the scanner pressure pad.  Have to place a very light amount of powder with a q-tip to make it slightly more slippery.  The only problem with that is multiple documents in the feeder may get pulled in at the same time.  To clean it and the rollers, use rubbing alcohol.  Maintenance is a pain in the rear, but it's the only way to get it working because HP will not acknowledge the defect.
