Automatic document feed (ADF) only scanning one page

When I load a multi-page document into the ADF and start a scan using HP Smart, it will scan the first page without problem but then will not scan any other pages. It sounds a little like it is trying to grab the next page for a few seconds, but nothing happens. I have to prompt it to scan more with the +Add button, at which point it will scan the next page, again without problem, and stop after that page.
