HP 8630
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8630 for myself and one for my secretary. After using one of the units for 2 years and the other for 3 years, we all of a sudden began noticing a horizontal black line at the bottom of the page when scanning through the feeder (does not happen when scan from the glass). How crazy that it would happen to both units that run off two totally different computers?! The only thing they have in common is both are run off the same WIFI.

I went out and bought the next model up (HP8720) to replace one of the units and no longer had the "black horizontal issue" which had been making me crazy but had to return the unit as it had margin, color and collate issues.  I had been so happy with the HP 8630 for years prior to the black bar phenomenon that i decided to buy a new one assuming that a brand new unit would certainly not have the black bar issue. Especially considering the 8720 i had here for 2 weeks had no black bar issues.

I was very wrong. Straight out of the gate...there itwas... the maddening black bar. Now I have three HP 8630's with black horizontal bars when feeder scanning. What is happening? How can this be?

Just noticed too that when i scan double sided through the feeder, the first page has a black bar on the bottom and the second page has a black bar on the top.

What in my office can be causing this to happen? And why only to this model? How do i fix this? What is the common denominator here? Come on techies...help a girl out

Hello, @dirtybird1 - Hope you are well!

Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a great location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.

I understand you are getting lines while scanning / copying using the ADF. This issue is mainly caused due to ink / dirt on the ADF glass strip. Please try the below-mentioned steps to fix this issue.

  1. Make a blank copy using the ADF. Ideally, you should get a blank document with the two vertical lines.
  2. Keep the output page on your flatbed / main scanner glass facing towards you.
  3. Follow the line or streak on the paper to the area on the ADF glass that is causing the issue. Thoroughly clean the thin “White ADF scanner lid strip” and the “Glass ADF scanner strip” using a lint-free wet cloth.
  4. Check the figure below. 3 is the Glass ADF strip & 2 is the White ADF scanner lid strip.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome.

Cheers 🙂
