Hi @Barebutt ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing black lines and smudges on your copies from the HP ENVY Photo 7164 All-In-One Printer, there are a few potential causes and solutions you can try:

Dirty or Damaged Scanner Glass:

  • Open the scanner lid and clean the glass thoroughly with a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner.
  • Check for any scratches or damage on the scanner glass.

Dirty or Worn Rollers:

  • Inspect the rollers for dirt, ink, or other debris. Clean them with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • If the rollers are worn or damaged, they may need to be replaced. Refer to your printer's manual

Toner or Ink Cartridge Issues:

  • Check the toner or ink cartridges for leaks or excess toner/ink. If there's any spillage, clean it carefully.
  • Make sure the cartridges are properly installed. If they are low on ink or toner, consider replacing them.

Print Head Alignment:

  • If your printer uses ink cartridges, check for misalignment of the print heads. Consult your printer manual for instructions on how to realign the print heads.

Check Paper Quality:

  • Use high-quality, recommended paper for your printer. Low-quality or incompatible paper may cause smudging.
  • Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the tray, and there are no issues with the paper feed mechanism.

Printer Maintenance:

  • Run the printer's maintenance/cleaning cycle. Refer to your printer manual for instructions on how to perform maintenance tasks.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer.

Take care and have a good day.-
