Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have installed the appropriate software for my Officejet Pro 8600. It will fax a scanned item or even print to HP Fax etc. but when I attach a built in coverpage from the software when I click send fax instead of of processing it ad going to the spool and send pop up window, it simply crashes back to the dashboard of the software and/or the send fax pick window, don't remember which. I am on a Dell when it does that. I think the software worked on my HP laptop when I had that connected up.. I am connecting through a USB cable. Any ideas how to fix it?

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

  • What apps are used to create a cover page?
  • How you're sending the fax? is it from file fax settings?

While you respond to that, let's try this workaround:

Send and receive faxes using a Windows computer and the HP software.

  • Send faxes from the document Print menu: Open the document you want to fax, click File > Print > Printer, select the printer that includes 'Fax' in the name (Example: Fax - HP OfficeJet Pro 6970), and then click Print to open the Send Fax window where you enter the fax number and make settings and preferences changes.

Send Fax feature from a document Print menu

  • Send faxes from the HP software: Search Windows for your printer model name and number, and then click the name in the search results. Depending on your printer, HP Printer Assistant or HP Solution Center opens.

    • In Solution Center, click the Home tab, and then click Send a Fax to open the Send Fax window where you enter the fax number and make settings and preferences changes.

    • In Printer Assistant, click the Print, Scan & Fax tab, click Fax, and then click Send a Fax to open the Send Fax window where you enter the fax number and make settings and preferences changes.

Send a Fax feature from a document Print menu

  • Save incoming faxes to the computer or email with HP Digital Fax: As an alternative to printing received faxes, you can automatically save them to your computer, a network folder, or forward them to an email account. Go to Use HP Digital Fax to Receive Faxes to Computer or Email for more information.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have tried everything you suggested, nothing works. When I try send anything using the built in cover page (with or without anything else) instead of going to the print (fax) quee, the application closes and goes to the desk top.  BTW. this posting forum is extremely confusing and I hope I am responding to Echo Lake, I don't know how to just follow this thread apparently. BTW, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. It didn't help, I have even tried disaboling the firewall and trying to fax, doesn't fix it. It is possible to fax a scan or even to print to a fax from something like Word but any time I attached the built in cover page, the send fax chrashes.

Could be an issue with the printer software/driver or Fax driver

We can try an uninstall and re-installing the printer drivers:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.)  Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer. Once the software and driver are removed, install the latest full feature software, Click here to download the drivers.

Didn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled completely according to the instructions and it still won't spool and send a fax when the built in cover page is selected, either by itself or in conjunction with someting else like a scan or a print to fax word document. Scans from the send the fax page and print to fax word documents, etc. do spool and send as long as the cover page is not selected. I have this printer installed on a Dell  Inspiron 5537. Norton Security Online is also installed. Turning off the firewall does not solve the problem either.

Let's update windows software To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Next update printer firmware:
1.) Open path C:/Windows/System32/Spool
2.) Right click on PRINTERS folder and select Properties
3.) Click the Security tab.
4.) Click Advanced
5.) Under Permissions tab click Continue
6.) Allow Full control to all entries below Principal.
7.) Click Apply and Ok.
8.) Open Devices and Printers.
9.) Right-click the Fax or the name of your printer and select Printer properties
10.) Click the Security tab and give full permissions to all the entries under Group or user names.
11.) Restart the PC.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
