Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I don't use my C4580 a lot but just found it won't scan.  Copy is OK.  Print is OK.  Scan from the printer to PC says "Scan Error".  Scan from PC says "No scanner detected". Print and Scan Doctor says "full software solution is not installed" but then the installer page has no "Download" button for the software.  I cannot understand instructions to install "Smart" or "eprint".  Could it be that a recent Windows 10 upgrade has killed the scanner?  I see a  running "Windows Image Aquisition" service which I don't remember before.  Is there a work-around.  Printer is on LAN (Wifi). PC is a Dell Laptop.

I see that you are facing issues with your printer. Do not worry, we are here to fix it.

May I know from when are you facing this issue?

Did you make any hardware or software-related changes to it?

Please try using HP Scan and Capture and check. For Windows Operating System: Download HP Scan and Capture (Reference document: Using the HP Scan and Capture App )

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Nirvana_95

Thank you for your reply.  I saw this problem a week ago but I had not used the scanner since April.  I have not made any hardware changes in that time.  Maybe there was a WIndows 10 update?  I downloaded HP SCan & Capture.  It could not find the scanner even when I gave the IP address of the printer.  My router confirms the printer is connected at that IP address.  The printer is working OK, and I can copy (=scan/print) from the printer panel so it seems the scanner hardware is OK.  I tried to update drivers using HP print and Scan Doctor but the Driver Software Download option is not available. Does this mean my drivers are up to date.

Thanks

Thanks for your response.

Enable scanning to a computer (Windows)

Open the HP Printer Assistant. Windows 10: From the Start menu, click All Apps, click HP, and then select the printer name.

Go to the Scan section.

Select Manage Scan to Computer.

Click Enable.

Let me know the outcome of it.

NIrvana_95:

Thank you.  I don't see "HP Printer Assistant" on my laptop.   The HP programs installed are ..

* HP imaging functions 14.0.

* HP Photosmart C4500 all-in-one driver software

* HP Scan and Capture (installed a few days ago)

* HP Solution Centre (I know this is dead)

I am surprised that you are telling me to "enable scan" with Printer Assistant.  The scanner was working perfectly before.

I tried to download HP Printer Assistant but failed to find it.  If it is important please tell me how to get it.  Do I need to do a full install again?  If so, do I need to uninstall any/all of the above programs first?

Alright.

Thanks for your response.

May I know if you are able to make a copy from your printer?

Let me know.

Thank you.  Yes, if I place a document into the scanner and press COPY on the printer, it prints a correct copy

In that case,  Let's try and uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

--->In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

--->Select your HP printer.

--->Select Uninstall.

--->In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

--->In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

--->Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

--->Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

--->Click on the Drivers tab.

--->Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

--->Select OK.

--->Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

--->Close Devices and Printers.

And then reinstall the printer full-featured drivers from software and drivers page

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I uninstalled as you said with no problem, but I cannot understand the installation instructions on the "software and drivers" page. i tried clicking "Install" next to the HP SMART section but I think that only installed HP SMART and not the drivers.  I tried clicking "download" next to the "HP Easy Start Printer setup software" but that downloaded and ran the Easy Start app, but no drivers.   I cannot see how to download/install the drivers.  HP Smart finds no printers.  My router can see it at 192.168.1.148.

Now the whole printer is not working - not  the scanner alone!

I should add that I can access the printer's embedded web page at 192.168.1.148/ via the LAN from the laptop.

I tried using USB cable and everything works OK using print/scan menus in normal Windows apps.  I ran HPPSDR this way and it reported print was OK but scanner had a "registry error" and told me to uninstall and install again.  I did not do that.  I prefer to use Wifi not USB because I have no space to put the printer close to the laptop.
