I can not send a fax from my All in One printer. I am receiving faxes fine. I have performed all the troubleshooting I can find. The fax test report says "dial tone not detected". My phone company came out and tested the line. It is working fine. I feel it is the machine. I have been trying to contact HP Support and have been hung up on 4 times (once by the chatbot).
HELP! If someone from HP answers this post, I do have a case number.

Hi @cmedrington,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re experiencing a frustrating issue with your All-in-One printer’s fax functionality. If you're able to receive faxes but cannot send them, and you're getting a "dial tone not detected" error despite the phone line being tested, this suggests a problem with the printer's fax setup or configuration. Here’s a comprehensive approach to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Verify Fax Line Connection
Check Fax Line Connection:
- Ensure the phone line is properly connected to the correct port on the printer (usually labeled as “LINE”).
- If you are using a phone splitter, make sure it’s properly connected and not causing interference. Try connecting the fax line directly to the printer to rule out issues with the splitter.
Test the Phone Line:
- Connect a regular phone to the fax line to ensure you can hear a dial tone. This confirms the line is active.
2. Check Fax Settings on the Printer
Verify Fax Settings:
- Access the fax settings on your printer through the control panel or web interface (refer to your printer's manual for instructions).
Check Dial Tone Detection:
- Ensure the fax setup is configured to detect dial tones. This might be a setting in the fax setup menu.
Set Correct Fax Line Type:
- Ensure that the line type is correctly set (e.g., “Analog” for most residential lines).
Check Fax Speed:
- Sometimes setting the fax speed to a lower rate can help if there are issues with the line quality.
3. Perform a Fax Test
Run a Fax Test Report:
- Use the printer's control panel to print a fax test report. This report may provide more details about the issue.
Test Fax Functionality:
- Try sending a test fax to a known working fax number. If possible, use a different fax number or machine to confirm that the issue is not with the recipient's fax line.
4. Reset Fax Settings
Perform a Factory Reset:
- Sometimes resetting the printer to its factory settings can resolve configuration issues. Refer to your printer’s manual for instructions on performing a factory reset.
Reconfigure Fax Settings:
- After resetting, reconfigure the fax settings including the phone line setup and dialing preferences.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
