Can't scan in color. Only the grayscale option is offered on HP Smart.  How do I activate the color option again?

Hi @disabella,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

First, check the HP Smart settings. Open HP Smart, go to Scan, and see if you can change the scan type to Color instead of Grayscale. If you can't find the option, try Advanced Settings.

Next, use the built-in scanner app on Windows or Mac. On Windows, open Windows Scan or Fax and Scan and check for color options. On a Mac, use Preview, go to File, then Import from Scanner, and select Color.

Make sure your printer drivers and software are up to date. Go to HP’s support website, download the latest drivers, uninstall the existing HP Smart software, and reinstall it.

Check your scanner preferences in HP Scan and make sure it's set to Color instead of Grayscale or Black & White.

If that doesn't work, perform a printer reset by turning off the printer and unplugging it for 60 seconds. Plug it back in, turn it on, and see if the color option is restored.

Lastly, check for printer firmware updates on the printer control panel by going to Settings, then Printer Updates. Download and install any available updates.

If the issue persists, let me know, and I'll guide you further! 😊

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍
