Hi @Bobo415,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with saving scans to your iMac desktop from the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720. There could be several reasons behind this problem. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the issue.

  • Check Connection: Make sure your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is connected to your iMac properly. Ensure that the printer is powered on, connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iMac, and the USB cable (if you're using one) is securely connected.
  • Update HP Software: Check if you have the latest drivers and software installed for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720. Visit the HP website (https://support.hp.com/) and download the most recent drivers for your printer model. Outdated software can sometimes cause compatibility issues.
  • Restart Devices: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off your iMac and the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720, wait for a few seconds, and then power them back on.
  • Verify Printer Settings: Ensure that the default settings on your HP printer are set correctly for scanning. You can usually access these settings through the printer's control panel or via its web interface. Make sure the default save location is set to the desktop or a folder on the iMac.
  • Test with Different Application: Try scanning using a different application. For example, if you were using the HP Smart app, attempt scanning from the native macOS scanning utility. This will help determine if the issue is specific to one application or a more general problem.
  • Reset Printing System: If the issue persists, you can reset the printing system on your iMac. This will remove all printers and scanners from the list, and you'll need to set them up again. To do this, go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners," right-click (or Ctrl-click) on the printer list, and choose "Reset printing system." Then, set up your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 again.
  • Check Disk Space: Verify that there is enough free space on your iMac's desktop. If the disk is nearly full, it could prevent the scan from being saved.
  • Try Different User Account: Create a new user account on your iMac and try scanning from there. This will help determine if the issue is related to your user account or if it's a system-wide problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
