Fax has always worked now it states no dial tone.  When I try to look into fax setup it is asking me for a password but I don't have a password.  My printer is a Laserjet Pro MFP M227fdw

I understand you are facing an issue with faxing on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw, there are a few steps you can take:

Checking the Fax Connection

  1. Check Phone Line: Ensure the phone line is properly connected to the "Line" port on the back of the printer. The line should be connected directly from the wall jack to the printer without any splitters or other devices in between.
  2. Dial Tone: Verify that there is a dial tone by connecting a standard telephone to the wall jack used for the printer. If there is no dial tone, the issue might be with the phone line itself.

Resetting the Password

If your printer is asking for a password that you do not know, you can try resetting the settings to factory defaults. Note that this will reset all settings, including the password.

Resetting the Printer to Factory Defaults

Access the Printer's Menu:

  • On the printer control panel, press the Setup button (it looks like a gear icon).
  • Navigate to Service or System Setup using the arrow buttons.
  • Select Restore Defaults or Reset.

Restore Defaults:

  • Select Restore Factory Settings or a similar option to reset the printer to its original factory settings.

Confirm Reset:

  • Follow the prompts to confirm the reset. The printer will restart and revert to its default settings.

Setting Up Fax Again

  1. Reconnect Phone Line: Ensure the phone line is properly connected again after the reset.
  2. Reconfigure Fax Settings: You may need to re-enter your fax settings. Refer to your printer's user manual for specific instructions.
