Product: HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer

I often scan from my OfficeJet 3830 to my laptop (something I have typed and printed out, or a photo) and save as JPEG.  But today the HP Smart insists it cannot find a scanner.  I have done all the unplugging and waiting and re-attaching and turning on--still no success.  And I have no idea how to perform the more detailed instructions about uninstalling, etc.  Any more ideas?
