I have just purchase a photosmart 6510 and I cannot scan to computer.  The printer tells me that I have to enable this via the printer software.  I know I have installed all of the software from the disc provided.

 

I cannot find where I enable scan to computer on my laptop.  The support information tells me to click on the printer icon on my desktop, I don't have one!  I have tried going through the control panel and can't find anything there. 

 

I go to the HP folder on my start menu and click on HP scan I get the following message "The HP photosmart 6510 series was not found".  I don't have a problem with printing at all. 

 

Have tried running the print and scan doctor and that hasn't made any difference. (In fact, the option for scan didn't come up on this).

 

How can I fix this please?  I am running Windows Vista home premium.

I have actually sorted the problem now.  But let me explain what it was.

 

I did try the scan doctor tool that you recommended after searching through on these forums, to no avail.  In fact, when I ran the scanner, it told me that there was no problem with printing, but there was no mention of scanning anywhere.

 

I actually uninstalled all the HP software, deleted the printer from my control panel.  Then reinstalled the software from the disc and then installed the printer again (I did things the opposite way round before).  And the scanner function now works.

Since you are having scanning issues then I would start with this HP tool called the HP Print Scan Doctor.

 

The HP Print Scan Doctor can be found by going to http://www.hp.com/go/tools The doctor is used to solve various problems that can occur that cause the printer to not print, scan or have overall connectivity issues. This is the first go to tool when attempting to resolve any issue that falls into those three buckets as it will either help resolve the issue or point us in the right direction as to what is causing the problem.

 

Run the tool and post your results.

My scanner also, does not work properly. I keep getting the error message that the printer software needs "scan to computer" enabled. The software does not open to allow that change. I have uninstalled the software twice and the scanner still does not work. I tried the recent solution and it too does not work. When I attempted to install the software from the disk, the software would not install. The message was my computer is running an unsupported operating system; it is running Windows 10. Right now this HP 6510 is only good as a door stop.
