HP ENVY Inspire 7220e All-in-One Printer

I have created the necessary shortcut for my HP Envy Inspire 7220e to scan to an email address. Even though the printer manages to send instructions for the use of shortcut to my email address, the printer fails to scan to an email address with the following message:

Connection Problem

The printer was unable to connect to the server.

Please try again later.

I should be able to configure an email address via the EWS settings, but I don't see it. The printer status report says:

21. Front panel destination list: 0 (I have translated this from the Dutch text that I get)

This message tends to suggest that I should have configured at least one email address.

The network connection is perfect and there are no problems reported in the status / diagnostic report.

I deleted all shortcuts and added a shortcut via HP Smart on my pc. Since I was giving the option to execute this shortcut now, I started it from HP Smart. To my surprise the printer started scanning and it did send the scan result now to my email address.

Given this success, I now executed the shortcut on the printer itself to no avail! The following message was shown in the language the printer was set up (Netherlands) meaning something like:

Error

An internal processing error occurred. Try again or manually check for firmware upgrades.

OK

The printer was installed a few days ago and I checked for firmware upgrades yesterday, just to be sure. So I tried again.

This time there was an error message in English! The error message I had earlier:

Connection Problem

The printer was unable to connect to the server.

Please try again later.

OK

Why the difference in language? To check if the shortcut works only the first time it is executed, I ran the shortcut again from HP Smart and it worked like a charm again.

Next I ran the shortcut again from the printer control panel, which again resulted in the first message in the regional language (Internal processing error). Trying a second time resulted again in the Connection Problem message (in English).

Further tests prove that the problem is not email related.

I created a shortcut for scanning a picture and upload the file to Google Drive. The same problem occurs. Executing the shortcut in HP Smart works fine. Executing the shortcut from the control panel of the printer gives exactly the same 2 error messages as with scan to email.

Hi @mmhmjanssen,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing a scan-to-email-related issue with your HP ENVY Inspire 7220e All-In-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
  • Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

If the issue persists, then please follow the below steps:

Option 1: Use the HP software to set up the Scan to Email feature.

  1. Open the HP software/printer icon on the desktop screen.
  2. Under the Scan or Scanner Actions heading, click Scan to Email Wizard.
  3. When the outgoing email profile window displays, click your email address associated with this profile.
  4. You will also find an option to delete a previously configured Email address
  5. Enter an email profile display name. This is the name that will display on the printer control panel for the email profile.
  6. Enter a security PIN to restrict access to this email profile from the printer control panel, if desired.
  7. Enter the correct SMTP server and SMTP port information.
  8. If you typically have to enter a user name and password to log into your email account, you will want to enter this information into the email authentication fields.
  9. Click Next, and then click Save and Test or Save to complete the email profile configuration.

Alternatively, you can also watch this video to know how to delete and set up an Email address for scanning from HP printers

Option 2: Open the embedded web server

1. Find out the IP address or hostname of the printer by touching (Wireless) or (Ethernet) or by printing a network configuration page.

Note: The printer must be on a network and must have an IP address.

2. In a supported web browser on your computer, type the IP address of the printer. For example, if the IP address is 123.123.123.123

Note: If you get a security message as "your connection is not private", click on Advanced and proceed to this website.

Step 2: On the printer settings page, go to Scan > scan to email > Select your email address > Edit > Authenticate > Email login authentication > Input new password > Next > Save and Test

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I deleted all HP printer software and re-installed it. I used HP Easy Start to install the complete driver and tools package. Even though I got an error message in HP Easy Install, the program continued and reported that the installation was successful. Printer and scanning works. I can scan from the printer control panel as well as from various apps on my PC.

That is not the problem. The problem lies in the shortcuts. Neither of them work if I start them on my printer. Not only the Scan to email shortcuts, but also the Scan & Print and Scan and save to computer shortcuts.

Besides, I could not find the Scan to email wizzard, neither any other way to configure an email address.

So either there is a problem in the firmware of the printer (I have the latest version) or HP Easy Start missed something while installing. HP Print and Scan Doctor comes up with an error message that says that there was an error with Device Registration. So maybe I am missing a Registry setting that causes the problem. I see that HP Easy Start creates logfiles, so maybe there is a clue in one of these logfiles.
