Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I run laptop connection to 8710 printer through USB port wire. After a recent Geek Squad Update, a HP Smart Icon showed up on my computer and when I click on it to scan, it says I need to be online to scan. I don't want to have to be online to scan. I checked back with Geek Squad and they installed a Microsoft App to run the Scan mode on the printer. I'd rather have the HP program to run the printer, but I don't want to be online to scan through USB wire. What would you suggest?

Hi @DanDL2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the recent update might have changed the way your computer interacts with your HP OfficeJet 8710 printer, particularly for scanning. The HP Smart app requiring an online connection to scan is likely due to its cloud-based features. To resolve this and get back to scanning via USB without needing to be online, you can install the basic HP Scan software that allows offline scanning. Here's what you can do.

Uninstall the HP Smart App

  1. Open the Start Menu and go to Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Scroll down to find HP Smart, click on it, and select Uninstall.

Download and Install the HP Full Feature Software and Drivers

  1. Visit the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page: HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet 8710) and select it from the list.
  3. Choose your operating system if it isn’t automatically detected.
  4. Look for the “HP OfficeJet 8710 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers”. This package typically includes the HP Scan software that works offline.
  5. Download and install the full feature software. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Configure HP Scan for Offline Use

  1. After installation, open the HP Printer Assistant from your desktop or Start Menu.
  2. Navigate to Scan and then Manage Scan to Computer.
  3. Make sure that Enable Scan to Computer is checked.

This process should restore the ability to scan documents via USB without requiring an internet connection.

Disable Automatic Updates

To avoid similar issues in the future, you might want to disable automatic updates for your HP software:

  1. Open the HP Printer Assistant.
  2. Go to Printer Maintenance or Settings.
  3. Find the Update Settings and select Never or Notify me when updates are available.

This ensures that any updates are installed only when you choose, preventing automatic changes that might disrupt your workflow.

By following these steps, you should be able to scan offline using your HP OfficeJet 8710 printer through the USB connection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
