HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
iOS

I have an HP Evny 7640-e all-in-one printer from 2016 or so. I love it.

The problem is that a while back the control screen went blank. The printer is on. I am able to print from my computer just fine. But the control screen is just a whitish gray. I  know the control screen is on because when it goes into to sleep, the screen is dark. When I touch the control screen it flickers on, but the copy and scan buttons and the text no longer appear. So I can't ask the printer to perform those functions.

I have unplugged the power cord from the printer and from the wall and let it sit. I have turned it off and back on again. I have hit the home page button and the back button and the control panel indicates via a sound that it is going back or going home, it just doesn't show up on the control panel.

I don't want to buy a new printer. This one is still great and I can't find anything else that prints in B&W or color, that scans, prints, copies, and faxes, that has such a small footprint, and is as sturdy as this one.

Thanks in advance!

@Eugenia97405, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP Envy 7640’s control panel display is still functioning but not rendering graphics properly. Since the printer still prints, this issue is likely related to the display hardware or firmware. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Perform a Power Reset

You’ve already unplugged the printer, but try this deeper reset:

  • Unplug the printer while it is on.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the wall and wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power cable directly to a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Power on the printer and check the display.

2. Check for a Display Firmware Issue

Since your screen reacts but doesn't display correctly, it could be a firmware glitch. Try updating the printer’s firmware:

  • If your printer is connected to Wi-Fi, update the firmware via your computer:
    1. Open HP Smart or go to the HP Support website.
    2. Enter your printer model and look for a firmware update.
    3. If an update is available, install it and restart the printer.

3. Try a Factory Reset (if the screen is still blank)

If the screen remains unresponsive, try a partial reset using a key combination:

  • Press and hold the Back button (↩) and Home button together for about 5-10 seconds.
  • If this doesn’t work, try Back + Cancel button or Back + OK button.
  • If you see a menu, look for Reset or Partial Reset and select it.

Let me know if this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
