Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a "virtual" fax number - it uses the same physical phone line but it has it's own number.   It uses a triple ring to distinguish from regular calls.  The physical phone is a cordless model.  We use Verizon FIOS.

When running the fax set-up in the new 6978 it shows 2 phone cords plugged into the printer - one to the phone jack and the other to the phone.  My previous printer was an HP 8600 and there was only one phone cord that connected on one end to the printer, and the other end to the cordless base.

I tried to use 1 phone cord in a similar fashion but it doesn't seem to work - do i really need to use 2 phone cords? What is the correct configuration please?  thanks in advance.   larry

No.

Only one phone cord is required.

You should plug a cable from the port labeled as 1LINE to your active phone line plug.

The other port, labeled as 2EXT is only intended to connect another device if required (e.g. connecting an additional phone next to your printer.

Generally, I suggest connecting the printer directly to your telephone port, then connect the cordless device to your printer if needed, connecting the fax through your cordless device may negatively affect the phone line connection.
