I want to select double-sided printing and am unable to do so because on the control panel there is no Function button to the right of the green button.

Hi @jackiea

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for describing the situation so clearly. It’s understandably frustrating when you’re ready to print double-sided and the control panel doesn’t show the options you expect—especially when the interface feels like it should be more intuitive.

Let’s gently clarify how double-sided printing works and why the control panel might not be showing the function buttons you’re looking for.

Understanding double-sided printing on most HP printers

On many models—especially those with basic or icon-based control panels—double-sided (duplex) printing is not selected from the printer’s screen, but instead from the print settings on your computer or mobile device.

If your printer supports manual or automatic duplexing, the option will appear when you send a print job from your device.

What to do instead of using the control panel

From Windows

  1. Open the document you want to print.
  2. Press Ctrl + P and select your HP printer.
  3. Click Printer Properties or Preferences.
  4. Look for a Finishing, Layout, or Printing Shortcuts tab.
  5. Enable Print on Both Sides or Two-Sided Printing.
  6. Click OK, then Print.

From macOS

  1. Open the document and click File > Print.
  2. In the print dialog, click Show Details if needed.
  3. Check the box for Two-Sided.
  4. Choose Long-Edge binding or Short-Edge binding depending on your layout.
  5. Click Print.

If your printer supports only manual duplexing

Some models require you to manually reinsert the pages:

  • After printing the first side, the printer will pause and prompt you to reload the pages.
  • Follow the on-screen or printed instructions carefully to avoid page order issues.

Let me know your exact printer model if you’d like me to confirm whether it supports automatic duplexing or only manual.

You’re doing everything right by checking the panel and asking questions—let’s get those pages flipping just the way you want.
