Whenever the document feeder is used there is a clicking noise like the gears are not meshing correctly. The document feeds ok but this "skipping of Gears" is new. Is this something that can be reasonably fixed or is it time for a new printer?

@Hornfixer

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the document feeder has issues with clicking sounds and skipping gears,

Well, this could be a sign to get a new printer but before getting into a conclusion, research is very important and so is troubleshooting:

Hence, here're a few steps that should help either fix or identify your concern:

Make sure that the carriage can move freely

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage moves freely across the width of the printer.

Step one: Check the carriage path for obstructions

  1. If the printer is not turned on, press the Power button to turn it on.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage might try to move into the access area. If it does, allow it to move to that position.

Clean the paper rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. If you are experiencing recurring paper jams, follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step one: Clean the rollers

  1. Gather the following materials:

  • A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that does not come apart or leave fibers

  • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

Click here for more details on each step and more (Skip to step 3)

(Though the header/title may be different, the steps will help resolve your concern).

Keep me posted,

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner,

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!

this is NOT a paper jam. the document feeder takes the paper from the tray and runs it throught the scanner NO problem EXCEPT the noise the gears seem to be making.

@Hornfixer

Thank you for replying,

I'm well aware as you are, that this isn't a Paper Jam and as I've mentioned before the steps recommended in the document will help resolve your concern though it's got a different header.

It was either that or I'd have to paste all those steps in here and make this a scary/awkward conversation.

I request you to go through the steps I've justed one more time:

Here's the link again for your references: Click here for more details on each step and more (Skip to step 3)

I'm adding another step from the same article to ease your mind:

Step one: Reset the printer

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

If the issue persists, follow the article till the very end and let me know how that pans out,

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

OK I have done the cleaning again and followed all of the other steps. The ADF pickup rollers still are clicking. Sounds like gears or a clutch is slipping.
