Does the printer acknowledge when you insert paper into the ADF? Or are you able to copy from the ADF? If you can not do either then the sensor in the adf that detects paper being loaded is either dirty or failed. There should be a flag that gets pressed when you insert the paper. Shoot some compressed air down by the flag as there could be paper dust blocking the sensor so it never knows that paper is loaded. I have also seen where curled paper when inserted does not activate the flag.
If you only have the problem when scanning then there is a setting in the software that is causing the issue.
