Hi @bjs73

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It seems like your HP Smart Tank 7301 is not recognizing the document feeder for scanning, which can be frustrating.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Step 1: Check Document Feeder Setup

  1. Ensure the document is properly placed in the feeder:
    • Align the pages neatly and adjust the paper guides to fit snugly.
    • Avoid overloading the feeder; check the maximum capacity in the printer manual.
  2. Confirm that the feeder rollers are clean and free of dust or debris.

Step 2: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for 2–3 minutes.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can reset the printer's scanning functions.

Step 3: Update Printer Firmware

  1. Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model. Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support
  2. Install the firmware update and restart the printer.

Step 4: Use the HP Smart App

  1. Open the HP Smart App on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Select Scan and ensure the source is set to Document Feeder instead of Flatbed.
  3. Test scanning from the feeder through the app.

Step 5: Clean the Document Feeder Rollers

  1. Open the document feeder and locate the rollers.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to clean the rollers.
  3. Allow the rollers to dry completely before testing the feeder again.

Step 6: Perform a Factory Reset

  1. Access the printer’s settings menu and look for the Restore Factory Settings option.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer to its default settings.
  3. Reconfigure the printer and test the document feeder.
