---------------------------------------------------------------------

I just purchased this printer - HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e

Suffice to say that so far the setup has been... interesting.

The following is all typed "on the fly" -- not a great choice but here we are.

Forgive "TMI", a general over done verbosity, and any outright errors and missing details...

What?

There is a lot different in this printer - In my opinion, much of this would be better described elsewhere (perhaps in an updated version of the HP EWS How-to document or a full and newly updated User Guide).

The image examples are also newly created and may be edited later.

=======================================================

Start...

Reminder >> Ignore what you don't need, dislike, or know to be wrong...

There are changes to the way this new printer manages security.

Printer security is embedded throughout the way the printer is used, accessed, and managed.

Though not a bad thing, this printer's security settings are different from previous OfficeJet Pro printer models.

Changes to the way the printer is managed are evident in the new EWS formatting (Embedded Web Server).

Practical Advice --

For simplicity, Start...

Set the Copy Defaults in EWS (Embedded Web Server).

Next, set the Copy Permissions in EWS.

------------------------------------------------------------

This printer series (EWS) introduces eSCL security settings.

Example - EWS - 9135e - Network > Advanced Settings > Remote Scan - eSCL settings

EWS_9135_Network_Advanced-Settings_Remote-Scan_1EWS_9135_Network_Advanced-Settings_Remote-Scan_1

------------------------------------------------------------

What about Copy?

Copy is (still) a function of the printer - additional software is not required.

  • Copy Defaults are set as they have been in previous OfficeJet Pro printer models.
  • The Copy Defaults are just that -- default settings can be changed for individual jobs when Copy is started at the Printer Control Panel.
  • Copy Permissions can be created and controlled EWS -- there is the concept of issuing permissions based on Printer User Accounts.

NOTE

On the Printer Control Panel >

Copy -- There are two options:  Document and ID card

Unless you are specifically copying an ID card, select Document for documents or images / photos

Edit other settings as needed for the current job

=================================================================

Try setting the Copy Defaults as you would have done in the 8020.

Set the Copy Permissions as shown in the example >>

For example, set Copy permission to account "Use Default"

Apply the change.

Try using Copy

If that works, that is, using "Default User" for copy, the setting might preclude having to set a user account for the Copy function.  If Copy does not work, add a Printer User Account that includes your HP Account login and password credentials.

Scan might be a different animal.

For example, because the Full Feature Software does not fully exist for this printer series, the "HP Scan" software installed when you install the full driver is actually the HP Universal Scan Software.

Yeah, but... "HP Universal Scan is new and different - I don't like it"

  • The old HP Scan software was part of the Full Feature Software that included the Printer Assistant.
  • Most of the "new" HP Scan (HP Universal Scan) software works similarly to the original HP Scan program.
  • True, matched with the other changes for this printer, HP (Universal) Scan setup and use are slightly different.

For the purposes of this message,

  • The printer model is presumed to be the OfficeJet Pro 9135e / 9130e series or a similar new printer / series.
  • HP Universal Scan Software will be described as HP Scan.

For example,

  • Desktop for printers supporting Printer Assistant and the Full Feature Software, HP Scan shortcut is named for the printer series
  • HP Universal Scan shortcut name on Desktop = "HP Scan"

Sample setup - Security Settings and access / use of HP Scan

EWS for OfficeJet Pro 9135e (and 9130e series)

EWS > Security > Access Control > Scan > Category Permissions >

Column "Sign-in Method" = Printer User Accounts

Next > In category Printer User Accounts

Assign / add user account that includes your HP Account login credentials

That is...

Add HP Account and login credentials as account type Printer User or (better) as the Device Administrator

Example - EWS - 9135e - Security Access Control - Permissions / Printer User Accounts

EWS_9135_Security_Access-Control_Permissions_Printer-User-Accounts_1EWS_9135_Security_Access-Control_Permissions_Printer-User-Accounts_1

Example - HP (Universal) Scan - HP Account login credentials
