HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

If I attempt to scan a document using a program on my computer or if I attempt to scan to my computer from the Envy touchscreen, I hear a "bump" sound and scan is locked up.  If I touch Cancel, it sits in cancel mode forever.  I have to recycle the power and then it scans fine.  I don't know what length of time must pass before the failure mode appears.   I have removed the Envy software and reinstalled it but same results.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Can you try using a TCP/IP port?

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Let us know if that works

So far so good!!  It has only been 24 hours since I last used the scanner so I don't know if it will still work when sitting idle for a more prolonged period but I'm pretty sure this is a good fix.  In any event, print and scan functions are both working fine with the ip change.  Many thanks Turtle.  This has been bugging the heck out of me.

Uh oH....  Turns out this didn't fix my problem.  Just tried to scan and it didn't work.  Same old same old.  "Bump" and then is locked up.  Maybe I should try to return this printer to HP ?

Hi @99Jax

Can you try this:

Creating a Static IP address using EWS

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the continued help.  I had difficulty changing the static ip address even following the instructions closely.  The PC doctor was able to fix whatever was preventing the change.  I am now able to print but strangely, when the print screen comes up, it says "printer offline" .  Same with properties, etc.,  yet it prints.  Scan will take several days before I can report if the scan problem is fixed.  btw, I have never had any problem with printing until today changing the ip address. Thanks

This change didn't solve my scan problem.  It seems that if I do not use the scan for several days, it locks up when I initiate a scan either from the 5540 screen or from a program on my computer.  How do I undo the static IP address?  When I right click the 5540 in control panel, it shows it as network and I do not get a ports tab.  Thanks

Hi,

Can you do a Restore Network Settings?

1. Go to Settings (Gear)

2. Network Setup

3. Restore Netwrok Settings

Hope that helps!

Actually, I was able to figure out how to get into the EWS and change my IP to Default.  That fixed my "HP Envey is Offline" etc.  But I am still at the same point where I started.  After a few days of not using, the scanner will simply not work.  I saw something in the settings on Power conservation but don't think it's the problem.  Just weird.  Never had any problems printing over any docile period.  But scan is another thing.  Works ok for a day or so after a printer re-boot but afterward, just gives me a "bump" sound and locks up.  Then I cannot cancel the scan either...just spins and spins.  Have to power down and re-boot.  Guess I'm stuck with that procedure for now on.  Dissapointed with HP on this because I'm sure I'm not the only one with the problem.  Thanks for sticking with me and attempting to fix my problem!
