My Envy 7858 AIO prints but suddenly cannot scan. I have run it thru Print and Scan Dr, removed and reinstalled the drivers, updated the SW, run HP SMART SW, powered down and up everything from router to PC to AIO and nothing. It is setup on an Ethernet network and worked fine until about 5 days ago. The only things that have happened since it was working is Windows Update yesterday. Prior to that about a week ago, my cable company switched out all our equipment and moved us to a new EERO router due to CATV issues. It has only one input and output on the rear so they put a switch in between the printer and router. In trying to address the problem, I have run all the tools and fixes available. The issue seems to be possibly that the PC when I tried to scan doesnt find the scanner. Yet the printer fx prints? One of the tools identified a port issue but said it was repaired. Still no functionality. I have run thru all the stuff on the Support page and come up empty. I got the printer to move from offline to online but did nothing. I also tried to forgo wired setup entirely and switch to wifi but while it found the network and worked for the print function it still failed on the scan so I reverted back to the wired approach. It seems illogical that the printer would be found and work but the scanner would not? I installed all the SW for the scan fx including the Windows 10 Scan and Fax SW and even it did not work. HELP!

Hi @bluesy52, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Your HP ENVY Photo 7858 can print but not scan, which suggests a communication issue specific to the scanner function. Given the recent changes—Windows Update and the new EERO router setup—here’s a structured approach to fix this:
Check Scanner Communication
Use Windows Scan Tool
- Open Windows Fax and Scan (Win + S > search Windows Fax and Scan > open it).
- Click New Scan and check if it detects the scanner.
- If it does not, move to Step 2.
Use HP Scan & Capture App
- Download it from the Microsoft Store.
- Open the app and see if it detects the scanner.
Verify the Scanner Service
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
- Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Ensure the Startup Type is set to Automatic.
- Right-click and select Restart.
Reinstall the Scanner Drivers Properly
Remove the current installation
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP ENVY 7858 and click Remove device.
- Uninstall HP Smart and HP Full Feature Software from Apps & Features.
- Restart your PC.
Reinstall the drivers
- Download and install the HP Full Feature Software and Drivers from the HP Support website.
- Ensure HP Scan software is installed along with it.
Check Network and Firewall Issues
Since you're using Ethernet:
Check IP Configuration
- Print a Network Configuration Report from the printer settings.
- Verify the printer’s IP address and ensure it is on the same subnet as your PC.
- Ping the printer’s IP address from the Command Prompt (ping <printer_IP>).
Disable Windows Firewall Temporarily
- Win + R > type firewall.cpl > Turn Off Windows Defender Firewall.
- Try scanning again.
Enable TWAIN and WIA Drivers
- Open C:\Windows\twain_32 and check if the HP scanner driver is present.
- If missing, reinstall the drivers again.
- Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
- Expand Imaging Devices or Other Devices.
- If you see an Unknown Device, right-click and Update Driver.
Check Scanner Ports
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on the printer > Printer Properties > Ports tab.
- Ensure it is using an HP Standard TCP/IP Port and not WSD.
Test with a USB Connection
To rule out network issues, temporarily connect the printer via USB, install HP software, and check if scanning works.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
