My Envy Pro 6400 all-in-one won't print from my cell phone.  I get a "printer isn't available" message and error code 74740 when I check.  The printer is online and printing from my laptop.  Any suggestions on what the problem and solution might be?  Thanks!

Hi @NYFBYA

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

We understand the HP ENVY Pro 6400 All-in-One printer is online and prints from the laptop, but the phone shows “printer isn’t available” with error code 74740. Since the printer works from the laptop, the printer hardware and Wi-Fi connection are likely active, and the issue is more likely related to the mobile print service, phone connection, app selection, or how the printer is being selected from the phone.

Suggested troubleshooting steps for HP ENVY Pro 6400 printer not available from phone

Restart the printer, router, and phone

HP recommends restarting all devices to clear temporary network and connection states.

Turn off the printer, then turn it back on.

Disconnect the router power cable, wait briefly, reconnect it, and allow the internet connection to return.

Restart the cell phone.

After all devices are back on, try printing again from the phone. HP lists restarting the printer, router, and mobile device as an initial step for the “printer isn’t available” message on Android.

Confirm the phone and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network

Please make sure the phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the HP ENVY Pro 6400.

On the phone, turn off mobile data temporarily and keep Wi-Fi enabled.

Check that the phone is not connected to a guest Wi-Fi network.

Move the phone and printer closer to the router for a smooth signal.

HP advises checking that the wireless signal is on and that the printer is connected to the same network as the computer or mobile device when wireless print jobs fail.

Wake the printer and check the wireless light

Touch the printer control panel or press the Power button once to wake the printer.

Confirm the printer is in a ready state.

Check that the wireless light is on and steady.

HP notes that a printer can appear unavailable if it is off, in sleep mode, or if the wireless connection is not active.

Use the HP Print Service Plugin on Android

If the cell phone is Android, install or update the HP Print Service Plugin.

Open the HP Print Service Plugin.

Accept the terms if prompted.

Open the document, image, or webpage you want to print.

Tap Share or More, then Print.

If “This printer isn’t available right now” appears, tap the printer drop-down menu.

Select the available HP ENVY Pro 6400 printer name that is not grayed out.

Print again.

HP specifically advises installing the HP Print Service Plugin and selecting the available printer when this message appears on Android.

Remove and re-add the printer in the HP App

Open the HP App.

Remove or hide the existing HP ENVY Pro 6400 printer entry.

Close the HP App fully.

Reopen the HP App.

Tap Add Printer.

Select the HP ENVY Pro 6400 from the available printer list.

Follow the on-screen setup prompts.

HP’s support guidance for printer discovery in the HP app includes restarting devices, checking Wi-Fi, restoring Wi-Fi setup mode when needed, and adding the printer again in the app.

Check whether the phone has permission to discover nearby devices

On the phone, check the HP App and HP Print Service Plugin permissions.

Allow local network access, nearby devices, Bluetooth, and location if shown on the phone.

Then close and reopen the app before trying again.

This helps the phone detect the printer over the local network and select the correct HP ENVY Pro 6400 print path.

Try printing from a different app on the phone

To narrow down whether the issue is with one app or the phone print path:

Try printing a saved photo.

Try printing a PDF.

Try printing from a browser page.

If one app gives error 74740 but another app prints, remove the printer selection inside that app and select the available HP ENVY Pro 6400 printer again.

Update the HP App and printer firmware

Update the HP App from the phone app store.

Open the HP App.

Select the HP ENVY Pro 6400.

Check for printer updates or firmware updates if the option appears.

Restart the printer after the update completes.

The HP ENVY Pro 6400 support page provides product support, software, drivers, setup, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and firmware-related resources for this printer series.

If using iPhone or iPad

Make sure the iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.

Open the file, photo, email, or webpage.

Tap Share, then Print.

Tap Printer and choose the HP ENVY Pro 6400.

If the printer does not appear, restart the phone, printer, and router, then re-add the printer in the HP App.

Most likely cause:

Because the printer prints from the laptop, the most likely cause is not the printer itself. It is more likely that the phone is selecting an inactive printer entry, the mobile print service is not refreshing correctly, or the phone is not seeing the same local network path as the printer. Removing and re-adding the printer in the HP App, then selecting the active HP ENVY Pro 6400 printer from the phone print menu, is the most practical next step.
