Hi @MTFox ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message you're encountering, "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)" on your HP LaserJet MFP M140we scanner, may have several possible causes. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that the scanner is properly connected to your computer via USB or network connection.
  • Verify that all cables are securely connected.

Restart the Scanner and Computer:

  • Power off your HP LaserJet MFP M140we.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Power on the scanner and check if the issue persists.

Update Scanner Drivers:

  • Visit the HP official website and download the latest drivers for your scanner model that are compatible with MacOS 11.0 Big Sur.
  • Install the updated drivers and restart your computer.

Check Scanner Compatibility:

  • Confirm that your HP LaserJet MFP M140we is compatible with MacOS 11.0 Big Sur. Visit the HP website for any firmware updates that may address compatibility issues.

Reset Printing System:

  • Open System Preferences on your Mac.
  • Go to Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) on the list of printers on the left and choose "Reset printing system."
  • Confirm the action and restart your computer.

Verify Scanner Software:

  • Make sure that you have the correct scanning software installed on your computer. Sometimes, the scanning software may be outdated or incompatible with the operating system.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • Check if any firewall or security software on your Mac is blocking the scanner's communication. Temporarily disable the firewall or add an exception for the scanner.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • On the scanner, check if it is set to the correct mode (e.g., USB or network scanning).
  • Ensure that the scanner is ready to receive scanning requests.

Network Connection:

  • If you are using the scanner over a network connection, make sure that both the computer and the scanner are on the same network.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
