Hi @randy118,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error 388 on an HP LaserJet MFP M426fdw usually indicates a communication problem between the fax machine and the receiving fax machine. This error occurs when there is a disruption in the telephone line during the fax transmission.
Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the Fax Comm Error 388.
- Check the phone line: Ensure that the telephone line connected to the fax machine is properly connected and not damaged. Make sure there are no line splitters, extension cords, or other devices in between the fax machine and the phone jack.
- Verify the phone line quality: Poor line quality can cause communication errors. Try connecting a telephone to the same phone line and check for any static, noise, or other issues during the call. If you notice any problems, contact your telephone service provider to have the line checked and fixed.
- Disable ECM (Error Correction Mode): Error Correction Mode is a feature that attempts to resend fax data if errors occur during transmission. However, sometimes it can cause communication issues. Try disabling ECM on your fax machine and see if the error persists. To disable ECM, go to the fax machine's settings menu and look for the ECM option. Consult the user manual for specific instructions.
- Try a different phone line: If possible, try using a different telephone line to connect your fax machine. This will help determine if the issue is with the fax machine or the phone line itself.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
