Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

VOIP connection is one of the "might work - supported methods".

This printer series really wants that landline option.

Try adjusting the Fax speed as explained on Pages 82-83 of the User Guide

If you are willing / able to use HP Smart to open and access the Fax application,

(then)

Install and use Mobile Fax to send a fax without the need for a printer-fax machine.

If you have an analog phone set, connect it to the line and try making a voice call. It is not unusual for VOIP providers to not configure these lines properly as special settings are required in order for fax to work. If you can make and receive calls using a telephone, reconnect the fax machine and then in fax setup, turn off error correction and set the communication speed at the slowest available setting.

If you are unable to make and answer calls even with the analog set you will need to contact your VOIP provider and get them to fix their problem.

Thanks for your response.

I should have pointed out that I did all of this with no luck. Mobile Fax doesn't meet my needs.

Good Information. I think one of our landlines is analog, but I need to double check. I have spoken with Charter, and they felt the line was working as it shoud, since we are making and receiving calls.

Thanks again!

Fax on Voice over Internet Protocol
You might be able to subscribe to a low cost phone service that allows you to send and receive faxes with your printer by using the Internet. This method is called Fax on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
The following are indications you probably use a VoIP service:
● Dial a special access code along with the fax number.
● Have an IP converter box that connects to the Internet and provides analog phone ports for the fax connection.

NOTE: You can only send and receive faxes by connecting a phone cord to the port labeled on the back of the printer. This means that your connection to the Internet must be done either through a converter box (which supplies regular analog phone jacks for fax connections) or your telephone company.

TIP: Support for traditional fax transmission over any Internet protocol telephone systems are often limited. If you experience problems faxing, try using a slower fax speed or disabling the fax error-correction mode (ECM). However, if you turn off ECM, you cannot send and receive color faxes.

If you have questions about Internet faxing, contact your Internet faxing services support department or your local service provider for further assistance.

Sometimes the answer is No.

True - Mobile Fax is limited (at this writing) to sending faxes (no receive function).

There are other eFax options out there - subscription models that can be tailored to your needs.

I am sorry the VOIP does not work.

Perhaps other than those recommended solutions in the User manual and troubleshooting guides,

@Repairatrooper  has an idea how to force the VOIP to work with the Fax.

I realize this is a repeat of the obvious:

Stand phone lines are generally configured to carry voice transmission.

VOIP is digital, yes?

Landline is analog, yes?

If you believe the printer is at fault (very unlikely, but possible), haul the printer to a friend's house or office where there is still a landline available - try that.  Still not guaranteed for the reasons explained earlier - landline voice lines can be pretty terrible and still work for a standard phone call -- data is fussy about line quality.  Still, many landlines carry Fax - worth trying if you can manage to do so.

That exceeds what I can offer on the subject -- I've never had to use or depend on a VOIP line for fax.

Update!

I can now fax from my desktop but not directly from the printer. Cable company replaced modem, router, and line from street.

Faxing only works from 1 particular phone jack, it works with both the 2&4 wire cords. Analog phone but not our digital phone/answering phone can be plugged into another outlet and used at the same time.

Thanks again!
