Hi @memrfixit,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I can sense how frustrating it must be when your HP printer’s fax feature isn’t working, even though you hear a dial tone. You’re doing everything right, and yet the machine isn’t cooperating. Let’s walk through this together.
Why Fax May Fail Even With a Dial Tone
Hearing a dial tone is a good sign; it means the line is active. But if the fax still won’t send, it could be due to:
- Incorrect phone cord connection
- Digital phone line incompatibility
- Dial tone detection failure
- Splitter or PBX system interference
- Incorrect country/region settings
Troubleshooting Steps
Here’s HP’s official guide to resolving fax issues when a dial tone is present: 🔗 No dial tone | HP® Support
Step-by-Step Fix:
- Use the Original Phone Cord
- Always use the phone cord that came with the printer.
- Plug it into the 1-LINE port on the back of the printer.
- Avoid Splitters or PBX Systems
- Remove any splitters or adapters.
- Connect the printer directly to the wall jack.
- Run the Fax Test
- On the printer’s control panel, go to:
- Setup > Fax Settings > Run Fax Test
- This will check the line condition and dial tone detection.
- On the printer’s control panel, go to:
- Check for Analog Line
- HP fax machines require analog phone lines.
- If you're using a digital line (VOIP or PBX), it may not work reliably.
- Test by plugging in a regular analog phone and listening for a normal dial tone.
- Disable Dial Tone Detection (if needed)
- Go to Fax Settings > Advanced Settings > Dial Tone Detection.
- Set it to Off, then try sending the fax again.
- Verify Country/Region Settings
- Incorrect settings can cause fax failures.
- Go to Setup > Preferences > Country/Region and confirm it’s correct.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
