Ever since I started using HP MFP Scan software with the HP Laser Jet MFP 135a that I bought a month or two back, there's been a problem with the cropping tool, in that, after a crop had been performed, the resulting jpg actually showed a small section of my intended selection rather than the selection itself. By trial and error, I managed to find a way around this, which I think was something along the lines of doing a prescan and selecting at that stage, rather than selecting when the scan had been completed (though my head is so full of computing at the moment I'm really not sure WHAT it was!).
Yesterday I foolishly decided to try uninstalling/reinstalling the software in the hopes that this would resolve the cropping problem properly, since when I've spent several hours going round in circles, scouring my PC to the best of my ability for any leftovers, re-starting, trying again, etc etc. I've tried everything I could from the thread HP Twain Scan error, for example, but to no avail.
I'm now in a position where the HP MFP Scan software is even more problematic than it was, in that it will only scan to jpg: Advanced Scan no longer shows a list of possible file types (jpg, pdf, tiff, etc) but simply, Last Used Settings.
Every time I run HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.6.4 it comes to this conclusion:
In my multiple attempts to follow these instructions, I've not been able to get the Uninstall button to do anything at all.
Any advice/recommendations would be most welcome!

@Rose_UK
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help.
Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Many thanks for your reply, Betty, but I had already tried those steps (which I'd found elsewhere) before I posted.
Since I posted, however, someone suggested that I forget about trying to make the HP MFP Scan software work and instead download HP Scan and Capture (https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/hp-scan-and-capture/9WZDNCRFHWL0?hl=en-us&gl=US) - which works just fine!
