Worked fine for ages, but suddenly...
yellow exclamation mark blinks... after click on "Scan a Docu or Photo" in HP Print Assistant a PopUp says "Scanner communication cannot be established..."
uninstalled and re-installed printer features (from the website! not CD), run "HP Print n Scan Doctor".... checked the FAQs...
Printing works, but scanning does not (if U press the B&W or Color scan symbol on the printer or via the "HP Printer Assistant". In the early stages it also said "Scanner busy"
After re-starting the scanner runs from left to right - left - right.. and stops in the center... and the yellow exclamation mark blinks !!
Any idea???

Hi @edheubach,
Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. I understand that you have scanning issues with your printer “HP 2540 “. I will be more than happy to assist you with this.
You’ve done an excellent job on troubleshooting the issue from your end. Kudos to you on that score. It is always a privilege to work with technical specialists like you. I see that you have tried to reinstall the printer software and also you’ve tried to scan from the printer and from the printer software also. You've also run the print and scan doctor utility. Brilliant job.
To assist you better I would require some information regarding this. Please let me know the operating system of the computer. Please let me know the type of connection. Is it connected through a USB cable or is it a wireless connection?
Please do a hard reset on the printer. To do this perform these steps:
- Disconnect the power cable of the printer from the back of the printer.
- Press and hold the power button of the printer for about 20 seconds to discharge any static electrical charges built inside the printer.
Then power on the printer and try to copy from the printer. Do not use the scan feature of the printer. Please check if the printer copies fine. If it does not, then the issue is hardware related and you need to get the printer serviced by contacting hp phone support by visiting this link: http://hp.com/contacthp
If it copies fine then we can correct the issue by changing some firewall settings on your computer.
If it is a USB connection, please ensure that the length of the USB cable is not more than 6 feet and follow the link given below for further troubleshooting. If it is a wireless connection, Please go to the EWS page of the printer on your browser by typing the IP address of the printer and try to scan from there. If it does not scan, please disable the antivirus firewall and check if it scans. (Mcafee or Norton)
I will include a few links for troubleshooting scan related issues on your printer if it is a USB connection. Please check these links out.
HP Printers - USB Scanner Connection Error (Windows)
HP Printers - USB Scanner Connection is Lost (Mac)
Please let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope that the issue gets resolved without hassles. Thanks for being a part of the HP community and if you require further assistance let me know and I will gladly do all I can to help. If you wish to say thanks for my effort to help, click the "Thumbs up" to give me a "Kudos" and also please mark it as “Accepted Solution” if this helps.
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead.

David, thanks for your help. My printer runs (successfully) Win 1o via WiFi (no USB). After pulling the PWR Plug and pressing the PWR Button for 30 sec I fired it up again. As soon as the printer got electrons (power 😉 ) the scanner bar moved noisily (as ever) from left to right.. -> left and right AND.. back to center position (!). It never stopped there before the problem occured !!! and the Exclamation Mark blinkes up !!
No Change Then ;-(
So I will go and look for a replacement; "repairing" makes no sense at this prize level.
Thanks anyway, David, for your assistance.
