Hi @rworth,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue where your HP OfficeJet 4650 scanner says it’s “in use” can often be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps. Here’s how you can fix it:
Step 1: Restart Your Printer and Computer
- Power Cycle the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, then plug it back in and power it on.
- Restart Your Computer:
- Reboot the computer to clear any lingering tasks that may interfere with the scanner.
Step 2: Check Scanner Software
- Update HP Smart or HP Scan Software:
- Ensure you are using the latest version of the HP Smart app or HP Scan software.
- Reinstall the Scanner Driver:
- Uninstall the printer from your computer.
- Download and reinstall the drivers for your printer from the HP Support website.
Step 3: Reset the Scanner in Windows
If using Windows:
- Stop the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and click Stop.
- Wait a few seconds, then click Start to restart the service.
- Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor and run it to diagnose and resolve scanning issues.
Step 4: Try Scanning from Another Device
- Test scanning from a different device (if available) to rule out an issue with your computer.
- Use the HP Smart App on your smartphone or tablet to attempt scanning.
Step 5: Factory Reset
If the problem persists:
- Perform a factory reset on your printer:
- Go to the printer’s Settings Menu.
- Navigate to Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Settings (specific steps may vary by model).
