HP Smart Tank 720 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

I am using a HP 720 Smart tank printer. Recently I find that the copy buttons of the printer stopped working. I tried resetting the printer by power on/off option, ran the diagnostics from HP smart app (no error found), the ink levels are also fine and also did cleaning & alignment of heads. Nothing helped. What am I do wrong that the copy buttons suddenly stopped working. I even tried to check for firmware updates. It is also up to date as well. Can someone guide me who faced similar issues?  Thanks

Hi @Jayanta68

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s frustrating when the copy buttons on your HP Smart Tank 720 suddenly stop working.

You’ve already gone through many logical troubleshooting steps, which is fantastic!

Let’s explore a few more possibilities that could resolve this issue:

1. Verify Copy Button Functionality via Hardware

Since the copy buttons are physical, the issue might lie in the hardware itself:

Check if the buttons feel physically stuck or unresponsive. Gently press around the buttons to see if there's any resistance or obstruction.

Power off the printer, and use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean around the button area.

2. Test Copy Functionality via Software

If the physical buttons aren’t working but the printer hardware is fine, try initiating a copy using the HP Smart app:

Open the HP Smart app on your Windows 11 PC.

Navigate to the Copy option in the app.

Test if copying works via the app. If it does, the issue may be isolated to the button hardware or firmware settings.

3. Reset to Factory Defaults

Perform a full reset to factory settings:

Access the printer’s menu using the display panel (if available).

Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Reset to Factory Settings.

After the reset, reconfigure your printer’s network and preferences.

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

A driver miscommunication might affect functionality:

Uninstall the current printer drivers:

Open Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your HP Smart Tank 720, and click Remove device.

Visit the HP Support website Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support and download the latest drivers for your printer model.

Reinstall the drivers and test again.

5. Update or Reset Printer Software

Even if your firmware is up to date, reinstalling or resetting the printer’s software might resolve bugs:

On your printer control panel (or app), check for an option to “Reset Software” or “Restore Settings.”

Alternatively, reload firmware updates from the HP website. HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.

Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer.

6. Inspect Power Supply

Ensure your printer is connected to a stable power source. Avoid plugging it into surge protectors or extension cords, which might limit power flow.

Try plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet to rule out power supply interruptions.

I tried all of the above things but none worked. But I accidentally found the solution. I opened the printer lid and then turned on the power to see anything wrong with the printer heads. But nothing seemed unusual. I frustratingly closed the lid. The printer immediately started to print the alignment page.  I used that printer and ran the alignment. It magically resolved the issue. I never figured out how and why. I tried head cleaning and alignment feature several times but invoked them from HP smart app. Those never worked. Hope this will help others who are facing similar issues and HP should look into why invoking from it's app did not work. Not everyone will know several manual options.
