Hi @MAC2344

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e is having trouble sending faxes from the document feeder, even though it can copy just fine. This suggests the issue is likely related to fax settings or feeder recognition rather than a hardware failure.

Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to fix it.

Step 1: Check Fax Settings

  1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Fax Setup > Basic Fax Settings.
  2. Ensure the Fax Mode is set to Standard (not "Fine" or "Super Fine").
  3. Verify that the Fax Header and Dialing Prefix are correctly configured.

Step 2: Test the Feeder with a Single Page

  1. Load one sheet into the document feeder.
  2. Try sending a fax to a test number (such as a friend or another fax machine).
  3. If the fax fails, check for any error messages on the display.

Step 3: Clean the Document Feeder Sensors

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) cover.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the paper pick rollers and separator pad.
  4. Leave the ADF open for two minutes to dry, then close it and restart the printer.

Step 4: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  3. Try sending a fax again.

Step 5: Verify Phone Line Connection

  1. Ensure the phone cable is securely connected to the Line port on the printer.
  2. If using a DSL or VoIP line, connect the printer through a DSL filter.
  3. Try sending a fax using manual dialing (enter the number manually instead of using speed dial).

Step 6: Update Printer Firmware

  • HP sometimes releases firmware updates that fix fax-related issues.
  • Follow the official instructions here to update your printer’s firmware.

If the issue persists, let me know what error messages appear, and we’ll dig deeper! Hope this helps.

Thank you but, no, this didn't help in the least.

In fact, it reads like generic information written without any specific knowledge of the model in question, HP 8139e.  On this unit, there is no "Setup" on the control panel nor is there any option to set the "Fax Mode." According to the prompts on the machine, fax setup is complete but--once again--we cannot send faxes from the document feeder. This is a new unit, delivered on Monday, set up on Tuesday, and this critical function--ADF faxes--does not work. I need help and I am not getting it from any of the multiple HP agents I have dealt with, all of whom seem to simply copy and paste material from an HP owner's manual and do not demonstrate any exact knowledge of the model in question.

I hear your frustration, Mark. Since your HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e isn’t sending faxes from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) despite the setup being complete, let’s focus on model-specific troubleshooting.

Steps to Fix ADF Fax Issues on HP 8139e

Check ADF Functionality

  • Load a document into the ADF, then try a copy function instead of faxing.
  • If copying works, the issue is likely fax-related rather than an ADF hardware failure.

Verify Fax Settings via Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Open a web browser and enter your printer’s IP address (found in network settings).
  • Navigate to Fax → Fax Receive Settings and Fax Archive & Forwarding.
  • Ensure the correct fax mode is enabled.

Run HP’s Fax Troubleshooter

  • HP’s support page for 8139e fax setup has troubleshooting steps here.
  • You can also check HP’s community discussions on fax issues here.

Update Printer Firmware

  • HP regularly releases firmware updates that fix fax-related bugs.
  • Follow HP’s official guide to update firmware here.

Test with a Different Phone Line

  • If possible, connect the printer to a different phone line to rule out line issues.
  • Ensure the phone cable is plugged into the correct port on the printer.

I know this has been frustrating, but I hope these steps help pinpoint the issue. Let me know what happens!

Thanks,
