Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Overnight development:  Scan at 300 dpi in black & white or color results in vertical light and dark strips visible on both screen

preview of scan and on printout.  I can use the brighten bar to make the scan & printout dark enough to read, but the light & dark vertical areas are still there.  This happens both when using the ADF and flatbed options.  Also, the 'contrast' bar does not work any longer.  To give you an idea of what's happening, I've used boldface on this paragraph to try to illustrate the problem.
