When I attempt to connect to google **bleep** server using smtp I get the following error (the username and password is correct):
Configuration
The printer is unable to validate the server’s security certificate because the certificate is either self-signed or has been issued by an unknown authority. To enable the printer to validate the certificate, import trusted CA (Certificate Authority) certificates into the printer.
To import the certificate, go to the certificates page, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Click "OK" to go back.
I have tried the seemingly nonsensical solution offered in other threads to change the dns server and that has no effect.

got it to work by using a suggestion in this thread:
by user casPol.
Thanks to casPol. HP support's suggestions were not much better than unplug it an plug it back in again.

Hi,
while following the Scan to Email setup wizard or editing the scan profile from the EWS page, be sure to uncheck the Validate Server Certificate or Authority checkbox.
Also, make sure you **bleep** settings allow a printer to connect:
Open the following link and login to the same account as you set for the printer.
Note: if you are connected, sign out from your account, select your account and manually enter the password to ensure you indeed use the correct password, then click on Security from the left pane:
https://myaccount.google.com/security
Within the Signing in to Google section, check the "2-Step Verification" velue.
If it is set as "On", create and use an App-Specific Password with the printer:
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en
If it is set as "Off", Within the Less secure app access section ensure that the feature is on.
If it is Off, click on Turn on access (not recommended) and toggle on the feature. Otherwise the verification will fail.
Once you are done run a test for the outgoing user profile and check if the problem been resolved.

Shlomi
