Hey there! @Guitar3435, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!
I understand that you are unable to scan from your printer.
Please try the steps mentioned below.
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop-up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Now, run a Software Update.
Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.
When you open Image Capture, click the triangle next to "Devices" or "Shared" on the left side. Then click "Show Details" along the bottom. On the right side, you will be able to pick the scan destination, file type and other settings.
Refer this article to troubleshoot cannot Scan from Document Feeder.(MAC).
Let me know if this works!
Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

Download the driver named "PCL-6" from the HP support site and get it ready to be installed. While you are running the installation of the entire software package, which normally takes forever and a day, it will reach 99% and then die with an error message that it took too long. Well, it was looking for the correct driver for your M477fdw - THAT IS WHAT IT WAS DOING. AND IT DID NOT FIND IT!!
So, solution for scanning from your computer is easy as pie. When the installation programme has placed the M477fdw in the devices list and you have reached about 75% on that counter installing the software/printer; simply right click on the M477fdw in the devices list and then install the CORRECT driver for WIN10 which is the one that says "PCL-6" rather than PCL6".... it is the one with the hyphen before the 6. I am not the one that found this solution but I can't find the thread that has the solution. THIS IS THE SOLUTION FOR SCANNING. Right click on the device, install updated driver that you have downloaded from the HP support site where PCL-6 has a hyphen before the six. DONE.
Good luck. Only took me 7 hours to find this out. Hope you find this a lot faster and it cures your problem.

I must confess - There are things in your instructions that are not clear:
1) You say - go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Installer.
(If this is part of the "Print and Scan Doctor" I can Uninstall)
(If this is part of the Control panel "Programs" I can Uninstall)
Otherwise - there is no other HP uninstaller that I can find
2) You say to hold the Ctrl, Opt & Cmd keys and click uninstall
(I do not understand Opt & Cmd keys????
3) I removed all other printers and reloaded software and got nowhere. My scanner scans using a Windows Fax and scan program ONLY. HP Scanner software is not loading properly. I also attempted to turn off Norton - and try again. To no avail
4) There is NO image capture
I really need help

@Guitar3435, Thanks for the response.
Thanks for trying out the steps.
I really appreciate your time and patience.
As you mentioned you still have issues scanning after performing troubleshooting.
Please download and install HP scan and capture app on your PC and check if it scans.
Refer this document to know how to use scan and capture app.
Let me know if this works!
Happy Weekend! 🙂

@Guitar3435, thanks for the response.
Thanks for trying out the steps.
As you mentioned you are getting printer offline error.
Please try the steps recommended below.
From the Control Panel, select Network and Internet, select Network and Sharing Center and then select Manage advanced sharing settings.
You can also type settings from the Metro screen (automatically opens search field), select Settings, and then select Manage advanced sharing settings.
Under Network discovery, select Turn on network discovery, and then select the Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices check box.
Administrator permission might be required to turn on network discovery. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Under File and printer sharing, select Turn on file and printer sharing.
Select Save or Save Changes and then reconnect to the Private network.
Let me know if this helps!
Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

Good news bad news (with a thank you)
My setting were already set to share.
I decided to remove the swoftware, and install it one more time from the disk
Your recommended HP Scan Capture is now working.
The actual M477 software for the scanner is non-operational
Any thoughts? or do I leave well enough alone?
