We use the Direct Send method with our Office 365 instance as our SMTP relay on an HP Color LaserJet CM4540 MFP. Scan-to-Email worked perfectly since we enabled it the middle of last year. (2016) Suddenly, the process stopped working in December 2016.
The initial symptom was simply not receiving emails of scanned documents. When I went to the web console to test in the E-Mail setup, I received an error stating " The operation failed. Please verify your congfiguration and try again."
We've created/recreated the email setup using details from this and similar articles:
Unfortunately, the problem persisted. I attempted some additional troubleshooting and general changing of the Email settings. The only "different" result I received was to have the test continue to try to send a test email in what seemed to be a never ending loop.
I've also attempted a firmware upgrade (v3.8), but after reading this forum I believe that may have been a bad idea:

I would attempt a firmware downgrade if I could find one.
Any suggestions for how to proceed?
Thanks in advance!

Yes-ish... Ended up having the formatter replaced. Once that was done we were able to reconfigure scan-to-email and it worked without issue.

Still trying to resolve this. Attempted to use GMAIL as a relay to see if I can get anything to send. Same results.
It must be something with the printer, but I do not know what.
Any helps you can provide is appreciated.
Thank you.
