I'm currently FAXing using a phone line (Verizon FIOS). Does HP have an option or are they planning to implement an option to send a FAX using my WiFi line. I know this is not implemented by any other manufacture of PC printers and most "services" require a monthly fee and/or a land line. I'm not opposed to a monthly fee since I'm paying Verizon for my phone line every month. So, is there a way for HP to send a FAX to a phone number and receive a FAX both using my PC (and HP software) over the internet.

This would save me a bunch of money each month, since the number of FAX's I've sent since I purchased my current printer is 59 and received is 52. If I send and receive 100 FAX's a year that would be a lot.

I know software exists to create a FAX and receive a FAX included in Microsoft operating systems (Norton had one years ago that was a stand alone app). But, it seems the problem is transmitting over the Internet to a phone number.

Smart phones can send information (text messages) to a phone number using only the internet, so I think it's not a difficult feature to provide. HP currently allows you to send print jobs over the internet to your home printer. What's the difference with sending a FAX to a printer?

Security issues with FAXing require that the document only be printed and not saved in an editable format. PDF files already do that.

What am I missing, other than a reluctance on the part of printer manufactures getting into this business or resistance from land line phone companies?

FAX lines are to use analog phone lines.  That is their specification.  The other option you have is eFax to send and receive faxes.

Thanks Provost. I realize that FAX lines are analog. Digital information can be converted to Analog and Analog can be converted to Digital. What I was trying to eliminate was the cost of the land line. After I posted my question I realized that my internet access is delivered over a land line and I'm not able to eliminate that land line anyway. The majority of my cost for the land line is the internet speed I'm getting. So, the post/questions was mute anyway.

Thanks for you quick response.

Well, you can do what most folks do now-a-days.   Simply scan and email.
