The built in printer driver does not have a scan option.
Where can I download the HO Director/Setup Assistant software?
It seems to be missing from HP.
If that software is no longer available - how can you scan with Mac?
We also have a brother printer which has scanning built into the driver - but no luck with HP.

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! After reading your post I see that you are unable to locate scan option after installing HP built in driver. I would like to help you out with this issue today.
- Go to MAC Hard drive, Applications, HP LaserJet MFP and double-click on HP Director.
- It would launch HP DIRECTOR.
- Select SCAN Button to scan document or photo .Make necessary changes as per requirement before clicking on the SCAN Button.
- Once it is scanned, the image will automatically be saved under Documents by default.
- Select EMAIL option and Scan. It would send the scanned document to the specified email address.
- Select Scan to folder to scan the document and one can choose the location to save. As well as one can change file format as per the requirement.
Click here and follow the steps mentioned in the document to fix this issue.
Let me know how it goes.
Cheers.

I thank you for your response and understand the situation well.
HP Director is not available for macOS 10.12 Sierra.
As an alternate you can use HP scan.app.
Click here and follow the first step in the document.
Keep me posted.
Cheers.

Sorry - this still isn't helping me.
There is no folder "HP Laserjet MFP" under applications.
THAT'S my problem - there is no installed software.
The instructions at the top of your supplied link says :
"Ensure the Full feature software is installed in MAC."
Ok - great - so where can I download the "full fetures software"?

Ok - so I downloaded that from the Apple site as instructed and ran it.
It looks like it installed drivers, and reported success...
But still no Scan application installed. No HP directory in applications.
Still no way or scanning from the HP 1312 to my Mac.
Is there no where on the HP site to download the HP Scanning software?
