Suddenly my HPEnvy7640 stopped printing and scanning. I use a MacBook Air with current version of Safari. I uninstalled the printer (- sign on the Printer/Scanner menu).
When I tried to reinstall, nothing appeared in the menu, so I got the IP address from the printer and entered it. Then the menu asked for the driver. I went to HPEnvy7640 and downloaded the driver.
I went back to the printer menu and entered the driver.
Then the printer began to print but still had problems with the scanner. It would not work with the document feeder. It did work when the document was put on the scanner plate.
For now that will work. Don't know what gremlin put a monkey wrench in my perfectly functioning system today, but we are back to about 80% right now. TY.

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums.
Changing the scanner source as ADF(automatic document feeder) may resolve the scanner issue. The steps below should help you change the scanner source to ADF using HP Easy scan:
1.) Open HP Easy Scan.
2.) Click Presets and select Edit Settings.
3.) Click Source and select Document Feeder.
Let me know how it goes!
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Have a great day!

A+ and three notes:
1) Somehow the yellow triangle exclamation box icon disappeared from my HP scanner overnight. Perhaps it talked to the newly installed printer? Now the scanner did not need to be told that the source was DOCUMENT FEEDER, and correctly worked with my default selection AUTOMATIC
2) I appreciated the "refresher" on the workings of the scanner. I had forgotten that there is a manual setting that may perhaps override a temporarily malfunctioning SOURCE selector.
3) I was able to select the ACCEPT SOLUTION (and thank you for follow up. Yes, there is someone at HP who is able to help the little guy/gal!) However, brain dead I must be, I could not find the KUDOs button. Please consider it "KUDO'd" as I found it valuable and amazingly timely. I honestly did not think there would be a response.
Have a great day!
