HP Photosmart 7520 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I have an Apple iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) running macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6. After updating to Mojave, HP Scan software stopped working. I downloaded and installed HP Easy Scan Version 1.9.4 from the App Store. When I try to scan a document I get the following error message: "Scanner reported an error. Software for "%@" failed to run." In the HP Easy Scan window there is a yellow triangle next to the picture of my printer. When I hover over the triangle, I see the following: "Cannot retrieve device information. Software for "%@" failed to run. Scanning can be performed only with default settings when device becomes available." I have had no problems with printing, but I can't scan. Printer is connected to my iMac wirelessly.

The solution is to download (and install) this package which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...

Easy Admin did nothing. Easy Startup did nothing. 5.1 drivers did nothing. This worked for me!

If this solved your issue, please thumbs up and mark as solved!

This did not work. I am so frustrated right now. The scanner was working fine and now it doesn't work at all. I am getting that error "Software for "%@" failed to run. (-9927).

Please help. 😞

Did you download and install the package I linked? After that, did you uninstall and reinstall your printer in the Printers section of the System Preferences menu?

HP Recommended

Yes, I downloaded from your link. I did uninstall the printer and reinstalled it in the System Preferences menu. I also get this message when I am installing the printer in the System Preferences menu: "Some of the software fort the printer is missing. The software is available from Apple. Would you like to download and install it?" I have to click ok or it won't work.

Before I started the process I also deleted the "hp" folder from "Printers" folder in the "Library" folder. This whole issue seems like an hp problem. It seems that between yesterday and today a lot of people are all of a sudden having this issue. Does not make any sense. Also, I haven't done any updates lately.

You said you downloaded my link, but did you run/install it?

HP Recommended

Yes, of course I installed your software from the link.

HP Recommended

Sorry, I had to ask. Several people have downloaded and then not installed, so it may seem obvious, but apparently it's not.

Did you re-download the HP 5.1 drivers after?

Try it in this order:

Install the package. Download the 5.1 drivers (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US) and install those. Add your device in System Pref/Printers.

HP Recommended

No go. I just did everything in the order you suggested and it still did not work. 😐

I am hesitant to even buy another HP printer because it might not work.

Try re-downloading the 5.1 drivers in the link I gave, and then try uninstalling and then reinstalling your printer using the System Preferences/Printers & Scanners menu. Then restart. Let me know what happens.
