Hi there.
I recently started scanning some things at 600 DPI on an old HP Envy 4520 and it has started taking OVER A MINUTE to complete a scan of the entire scan area. The bulb also returns to the top of the scan bed slower. It used to complete each scan at a more normal speed- maybe closer to 30 seconds? I checked for firmware update, it is fully up to date. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in. It is functioning fine, the images it produces are still high quality, but it is infuriatingly slow. Please advise. What could have caused this?
it also makes a very faint high pitched ringing noise unless it is shut off. It's possible it has always done that and I just didn't notice.

Hi @artistuser,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The slow scanning speed on your HP Envy 4520 could be due to several factors, including aging hardware, software settings, or communication issues. Here are some possible causes and troubleshooting steps.
Potential Causes & Fixes:
High DPI Setting (600 DPI)
- Scanning at 600 DPI is significantly more resource-intensive than lower resolutions like 300 DPI or 150 DPI.
- Try scanning at 300 DPI and compare the speed. If it returns to normal, the high resolution may just be pushing the scanner to its limit.
Scanner Lamp Aging
- Over time, the scanner bulb may degrade, causing slower warm-up times and movement.
- If the scanner has an energy-saving mode, try disabling it.
Connection Issues (If Using Wireless)
- If scanning wirelessly, latency can slow things down. Try using a USB cable and see if the speed improves.
Background Processes & Software Issues
- If scanning through HP Smart or another software, try HP Scan and Capture or Windows Fax and Scan instead.
- Close unnecessary background applications that may be slowing down processing.
Power Supply Issues
- A weakened power adapter or power fluctuations can cause slow mechanical movement. Try plugging the printer into a different power outlet.
Scanner Belt or Motor Wear
- The slower return of the scanning arm could indicate belt wear or motor strain. There isn’t an easy fix for this aside from servicing.
Faint High-Pitched Noise
- Some HP printers emit coil whine from their power supply or scanner assembly. If the noise gets worse over time, it may indicate a power regulation issue.
Next Steps:
- Test at 300 DPI to compare speed.
- Try a USB connection if scanning wirelessly.
- Check power supply and outlet for stability.
- See if scanning is faster in a different software (HP Scan, Windows Fax & Scan).
- Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to detect software issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
