Envy 5530 Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My HP Envy 5530 has suddenly stopped scanning. My laptop has recently seen the May 2020 windows update installed so I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or a cause. When I turn my printer on, the scanner head adjusts and the light flashes. When I call for a scan via the HP Smart app, the scanner head moves across the glass bed to the other side but then stays there and the printer screen and PC screen both show scanning but nothing happens. When I select cancel, the printer screen shows cancelling but does not cancel (after 10 minutes). My only option is to shut the printer down when the scanner head returns to it's normal position. I've uninstalled and re-installed all the HP software. I've searched the forum for similar problems but nothing is found. I've downloaded the Microsoft scan app and the result is similar. I'm inclined to think the driver is at problem as the scan head moved freely. Any ideas anyone please.

@Kirky3 Lets start with power reset as per HP standards, here's how we recommend doing it:

  • Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
    • NOTE:
    • HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue persists, please upgrade the printer firmware:

Hi Riddle_Decipher. Thanks for your reply.

I had already tried the hard reset and the firmware update before asking the community. I have tried again today and unfortunately without success. The HP Smart app told me the firmware was up to date.

I did this over my wifi network so I plan to try again using the USB cable and download the latest update to see if I can overwrite the firmware currently installed.

I'll let you know if I have any success.

I think I have now exhausted all options. I've tried the earlier suggestions using the USB connection but I just get the message the firmware is up to date. I've removed all HP software from my laptop and re-installed without any improvement. There is one piece of HP software that will not uninstall so I tried another laptop with an older version of windows 10 and I get the same result i.e. the scan function does nor work. I've tried numerous suggestions from other online posts all without success. The scan head does not move now whereas it did before I started this so I guess the situation has got worse. The printer will also not perform a straightforward copy using the 'copy' function from the printer screen which can normally be done without being connected to a PC so I'm convinced the problem lies within the printer firmware. Unless there is a way of installing an earlier version of firmware I see no way of fixing this issue. What worries me now is that when the ink cartridges need replacing, the head alignment will not work as this requires a scan of the alignment print so very shortly my printer will be rendered useless. I guess I need to consider the purchase of a new all in one very shortly.

@Kirky3 The only way to revert to an earlier firmware is to reset the printer, if that's something you wish to dwell into, here's all you need to do:

I suggest you check my private message for steps on performing a full reset, the instructions are designed for your specific printer and if anyone with a different model would try the steps, it may render the printer unstable, hence a private message would be the safest way of sharing this information: Click here to know how the private message function works.

Stand by for updates!

And have a good day.

(P.S: If anyone wants these instructions for their specific printers, please create a public post and tag me, I'll be happy to help).
